The agents that matter
OpenAI publishes separate user agents for separate jobs, and they respect robots.txt independently:
- GPTBot — crawls pages that may inform model training and retrieval.
- OAI-SearchBot — indexes pages for ChatGPT's search surface.
- ChatGPT-User — fetches a page when a user's prompt causes a live visit.
Common reasons ChatGPT skips a site
In audits we run, the same handful of causes come up repeatedly:
- A blanket Disallow, or an explicit block on GPTBot inherited from a template robots.txt
- Key content rendered only in the browser, so the fetched HTML is nearly empty
- No Organization schema, so the brand is not resolvable as an entity
- Pages with no question-shaped headings and no short, liftable answer beneath them
What to do about it
Allow the agents you want, publish an accurate sitemap, ship Organization and FAQPage schema, and restructure your top pages so each buyer question is a heading with a two-sentence answer directly under it. Then re-audit and verify the change.

Should I allow GPTBot?
That is a business decision. If you want to be a source in ChatGPT answers, allowing OAI-SearchBot at minimum is necessary. The audit tells you what your current rules actually do.
How fast do changes take effect?
Crawl and refresh cadence is controlled by OpenAI, not by us. Readiness changes are verifiable the same day; visibility changes are not on a schedule anyone can promise.
